Band Together for School Music at Holiday GiveOrcas Dec. 3-12

Every year, 130-140 students from 5th through 12th grade participate in band & strings groups at the Orcas Island public school. Providing access to a reliable musical instrument to learn on is an important part of the public school music program, making music education more affordable for families. A nominal rental fee allows EVERY band and strings student access to an instrument of their choice, without having to purchase or rent one privately, as is the case at many other school districts.

Orcas Island School District (OISD) music teachers oversee the collection of musical instruments acquired over the years through in-kind donations, loans and fundraising. Instruments are used for daily practice & performances. Rental fees collected from students help with a portion of maintenance and repair costs necessary to keep the instruments in reasonable playing condition. The music teachers also help maintain instruments until they are beyond repair. This year, a few instruments need replacement.

In the 2024 Holiday GiveOrcas, Music Advocacy Group (MAG) is raising funds for a baritone saxophone, F attachment trombone, a French horn and a string bass storage rack. The goal is to ensure that music students have playable instruments and advanced learners have instruments to learn more challenging pieces. These gifts to the school music program will benefit many OISD student musicians (and their families) for years to come.

MAG’s OICF Holiday GiveOrcas goal is $14,200 to fund:

  • Baritone Saxophone—The current instrument is not functional. A new saxophone is needed for large band & solo/ensemble.
  • F Attachment Trombone—For advanced learners to play more challenging pieces by expanding range & offering alternatives to tricky slide movements.
  • French Horn (Double)—A higher quality double horn is needed to replace an older, borrowed instrument.
  • Mobile String Bass rack—The existing, homemade rack is top heavy & unstable for moving instruments to and from performance areas. The new rack keeps basses safe for transport & storage.

Your support makes a difference. Thank you!
